Reading on a tablet vs reading an actual book

PROS & CONS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT

reading on a tablet vs a book - pros and cons

Reading on a tablet is something a lot of people enjoy, and there are a lot of benefits from it. But there are also some big cons compared to reading an actual book, and we’ll talk about both here today.

The big convenience of a tablet

You can bring it anyware

Reading on a tablet is something I have done for years, but reading actual books is something I’ve done since I was a kid. So I’m used to both, and usually switch in between depending on the situation.

When it comes to convenience, there’s nothing that can compete with a reading tablet. I have used mine on countless trips, had mine in my hand bag when I was in the emergency waiting room for hours and so many other situations where a book or several of them would have taken up so much more space and weight. So when it comes to convenience, there’s nothing that can compete with a reading tablet, especially if you want to bring a lot of books.

Features that helps your reading

There are some features which really helps your reading on a lot of tablets. I have read on my tablet countless of times on 1% screen brightness when putting kids to bed, or not wanting to wake up other family members in the middle of the night. So it’s amazing being able to read without having to have a light.

I also really enjoy the dictionary, since I read mostly in English which is not my native language. Being able to just tap on a word and get the meaning of it is great.

Some tablets also have an option that you can sync your reading to the audio book, and either do immersive reading (listening and reading at the same time) or switch in between, which is also great when if you like to both read and listen.

Faster & Cheaper (After a while)

Reading on a tablet is also nice because you can access books immediately after you have purchased them on your tablet or online. There is just a matter of seconds for downloading and then you have your next amazing story in front of you. No waiting time for package deliveries or going to the book store.

It can also be cheaper to buy e-books and tablets like Kindle & Kobo have subscription options where you can get x amount of books for a very small cost each months.

So even though the price for buying your tablet can cost quite a bit, the books can be cheaper after that.

New releases from indie authors

An other perk with reading on your tablet is that you can also read a lot of indie authors books since it’s popular to publish them via Kindle Self Publishing for example. So if you are looking for a bit more variety than what you can get in your usual bookstore, that’s one way to go.

The downsides to reading on a tablet you need to consider

You miss out on something

But… I can’t write this post without mentioning that you also miss out on something by not reading an actual book. There is something with holding the cover of the book, flipping through pages and seeing how much progress you have actually made that you can never get on your tablet. Even though mine tells me how many % I have read, there is just something better by seeing it, in my opinion.

It can be more confusing

I also think that there are some things that are easier with reading a proper book. When I read a lot of books in a series on my tablet (Stormlight Archive for example), it almost felt like one really long book and not five separate volumes. So when I try to think of my favorite moments or which book I liked more than the other, I have no idea where they happened. Somewhere in the middle?

I also thinks it so much easier to go back and forth in a real book. I’m pretty good at taking notes on my tablet but I still find it easier to go back to a map or read a chart for a magic system if I’m turning pages. When I read Mistborn, I actually missed out on the chart for the magic system, which would have been really handy to have while reading. So it can be a bit more confusing to read on a tablet compared to an actual book.

Your best books wont decorate your home

One of the best things with reading a book is also to put in your book shelf, and make it a part of your home. When reading on a tablet, you really miss out on having the physical copy of the amazing story you just lived though. I usually buy the books I love the most for my book shelf anyway, but then it’s twice the cost. And the book isn’t used and loved like it would be if I experienced it by reading it the first time.

It’s a screen after all

Even though reading tablet has displays that you can turn off the brightness completely, it is a screen after all. And reducing your screen time is one of the main benefits from reading books. A book will never run out of battery in the middle of the most exciting part of the book.

But, different readers thinks differently about this, and it comes down to your personal preference. How do you prefer to read? Comment down below.
